Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Strangers Become Friends Over Dinner

--by cyctw, posted May 19, 2018
There are days...and then there are days!

My wife and I went to this vegan restaurant to give it a try. As we're eating our pepper and salt tofu, a young lady (Debra) walks in. She isn't aware that the place is vegan. Turns out, Debra's looking for some meat. My wife and I talk up the place and invite her over to try some of our tofu. Debra tried it and enjoyed it. She was going to go out and talk with her mother, so we offered her some tofu to bring to her mom.

A few minutes later they both walk back in. We had the rest of our meal by this time, so I brought over a sampling of what we had ordered. Debra then asked the waitress to just duplicate our order for them. Next, Debra says, "and we want to pay for their meal", pointing to my wife and I. We tried to say no, but Debra was insistent.

That's not the end of it, either. Of course hugs were in order. Debra came over to our table and my wife got up to hug her. Debra hugs my wife and puts $100 into her hand. My wife adamantly says NO, but Debra is insistent. What is one to do? Debra keeps talking about our kindness, we keep talking about hers and her mothers. As we're all hugging they each keep saying, "God bless you." The workers are blown away by this whole exchanged between four (former) strangers.I left a tip that would cover all of our meals and we were on our way.

This is one for the books, that's for sure. I've been witness to so much kindness, especially over the last few years, as I began to pay more attention. What I love so much about this is that my wife was able to experience this...and be on the receiving end of kindness from a stranger is new to her, at least at this level. We now have a new favorite restaurant and every time we go there my plan is to pay for someone else's meal.
