Sandwich Therapy
Last night, I was waiting in line to place my order at a fast food place. The lady just ahead of me was taking a long time to order and asking the cashier many questions about the options. That slowed us all down, just enough for me, who seldom notices what people wear, to notice that she was dressed like a person who has been living on the street. Maybe she was homeless and was having a hard time placing her order in a place with limited choices on the menu because this was already more choice than she had ever had in her life. I saw this as an opportunity and walked up to stand near her by the cashier. When she had finished ordering, I asked her if she would mind if I just paid for her sandwich. She looked at me and asked, "you want to pay for my sandwich? ... Read Full Story >>

Welcoming a Newcomer to a Group
I have been a part of a group activity for about 5 weeks now. Last night, one of the group members brought his young girlfriend to it. She was feeling shy initially, being the new comer to the group. I welcomed her and said a few things to make her feel comfortable, encouraging her to tell me about herself as I told her a few things about myself. Soon, she was more at ease and instead of being nervous, was opening up to the fun we were having. At the end of the activity, as I left the meeting, he called out my name and gave me a spontaneous hug, for the very first time. I don't know what prompted it, but I was happy for it, and immediately wanted to adopt him as my son ! Kindness breeds and is often returned back multiplied.

From the Hand of a Child
A child walked around the temple with a gardenia flower, bringing it to the nose of each devotee so each could enjoy the fragrance of it. It was a simple and beautiful experience.
I brought a flower home and have it on my kitchen counter. All day, as I walk past it, I reconnected with that lovely feeling of sitting in the temple and having the surprise gift brought to me so beautifully.
Thank the earth and the flower and the child for making this possible.

The Joy of Passing On Books
I went through my bookshelf and identified more than a dozen books that are going to find a new home where they will be enjoyed and read. It was an act of kindness to myself to have created some space on my bookshelf.
The books being given away have served me well and will hopefully be just as useful to the new owner/readers. I am a big fan of libraries and think that the same book being read by many people is such efficient use of the resources. In example, the trees that were killed to make the paper that the book is written on, it was not in vain.
