Lessons from an old woman on the bus

Last night on my way back from work, I was caught again in a crowded bus where you don't even have space to put your legs on the floor at times. Every person's attention is to the next seat which gets vacant.

It is a like a tight musical chair situation. An old lady with heavy luggage got in this bus. And after some time, somebody offered her a seat. A generous act.

What I saw after this was a display of an unconditional love. This lady kept offering to share her seat with whoever was standing next to her. The seat is meant for 2 people.

An old lady was showing me how easy it is to be kind and generous and what unconditional love is. She was passing her kindness to everyone of us without a smile card in her hand. I felt fortunate to be witnessing this standing behind her. She didn't even knew that she was doing a random act of kindness.

Warmth of a 30 days old baby!!!!

One month back, my very close friend was delighted to deliver a girl and boy TWINS. She was a little worried before her delivery as to how things were going to turn up at the end.  How was she going to manage twins?  But after all, she is a mother. After the first look at her newborn babies, all her worry went down the drain.  Last night, I happened to visit my friend. And the best gift of the evening was to hold the boy in my arms for more than 60 minutes. He was completely wrapped in a warm cloth and his tiny hands and legs were tucked inside the woolen piece of cloth. I kept looking at him. Slowly he went to sleep. Spreading the Love

I sent one of my friends the link to our helpothers website and asked her to join it. And guess what she wrote in return.

"Hi darling, I joined! It is strange I have just had a cortisone injection in my hip... and boy oh boy was it painful. But this morning after doing my prayers I decided to find something good in everything and be happy and smile. Life is too short to be sad, and you send me this site that's God showing me I was correct in my prayers, thoughts, and hopes."

A simple thing like forwarding this website link can be so lovely. I am going to send more to few of my online friends.

Exact Change Needed

I was a regular commuter in the virginia bus as well as metro trains during my job in virginia a year back. I will carry the exact change needed for the day in the purse. One morning as I was traveling in the bus, one commuter got in the bus. Somebody new to the town and this kind of a traveling...he didn't have any change on him.

After he got in the bus, he was feeling embarrassed as he didnt have any change to be put in the change machine next to the driver. I was very sure I didnt have any extras. I still thought to give it a shot. And to my surprise I found the EXACT CHANGE in my purse which this person needed. I immediately took it out and gave it to him. He was so happy and thanked me. He said that he will return it the next time he is in the bus.

I never saw him again in the bus but just a few coins made a difference.

Giving up Bus Seat for a Smile

After reading the "Drawing a smile" posting by our friend this morning, I was inspired to scribble something too.
I am a regular traveler of the local bus in bangalore, India. Most of the people in the city travel by these buses which get very very crowded at the peak hours of the day.

In the morning I always get a seat as it is the first stop of the bus. Evening though I usually get a seat 3/4th way in the journey. But what I have noticed is a simple act of giving a seat to someone gives them so much joy. Sometimes when I see an old lady standing, I make it a point to give her my seat. You should see the sparkle of joy in their eyes.

A simple thing as a seat gives such joy and brings smile on someone's face. I better not miss any opportunity to spread this smile. Let me be a greedy in being kind...

Fees for an Exam

My office is on the 11th floor in the central part of Bangalore city. One afternoon, I was by working by myself and a person walked into the office. He was physically handicapped and was walking with the help of a armrest. He asked for my boss because he had come earlier too to meet him. Unfortunately my boss wasn't in the office. When I asked him why he had come, he handed over a paper which was a letterhead of a school and the signature of the principal of the school at the bottom. The name said that the photo on the letter was that of his son. The man met with an accident few months back and was unable to do any work at this point and his son needed to pay the fees for the exams. There was three denominations written on the paper. The exam fee was Rupees 100 (a little over 2 U.S. Dollars). It seemed a very small amount for me but for that person it must be big. I removed a 100 rupee note from my purse and handed it to him. The man gave a surprised look and walked off.

I don't know if this person was genuine or not. But surely the happiness and the sadness on his face seemed one.

Divine Dancing

During our weekly spiritual get together, the instructor surprised us with a wonderful game this time.

Music was played and everyone had to chose a partner for them and then help them dance to the tune of the music. If they didn't know how to dance, you had to teach them to dance. And at the end of it we had to praise our partner genuinely for whatever she or he did.

It was such a beautiful exercise to dance with someone holding hands and then see the divinity in them and praise them for it. Praising someone brings out the divine quality in not just them but in us too.

Few steps of dancing and everyone was smiling bright.

Last week my close friend was not feeling well and she hesistated to tell me thinking I will be worried. I was not sure what I could do for her to make her feel better. Monday morning as I was entering my office building, I went to the flower shop next to our building. I sent a beautiful basket full of flowers to my friend with a note saying "Have a wonderful day".

She was so delighted to see the flowers coming into her office

Sometimes a small act like these for those so close to your heart can make their day.

Small Things to Make Someone's Day

My very close friend is pregnant and right now she has taken off from work and has been at home for the past week.

So I decided to make her day by buying 4 roses for her which is her Favorite flower, an ayurvedic health drink, and few other things. Most importantly, I gave her a photo of her spiritual teacher. She was thinking of him very much that morning. I spent some quality time with her talking and chit-chatting.

I gave one of my dresses to the girl who helps her out at home with household chores. She was very happy too. Sometimes we take people who are very close to us for granted. But small things like these can make their day.

Let's not forget everyone is waiting to be loved.
