Placemats for Seniors Who Made Our Existence Possible
We make crafts with the children of the community at our local outreach center every week. Once a month, we make crafts for others, and I have a comment box so the children can give their own ideas. The children LOVE making crafts for others, they have shared lots of reasons for doing so, and we often go over the reasons we are giving to others.
One of the young children wanted to make placemats for seniors. We have done this before, but this little girl was not previously in attendance :). We created placemats, and I asked her why she wanted to make them for seniors.
She responded by saying something that I will never forget. From a 6 year-old's mouth: "We are everything because of those that lived here before us." Amazing! We then went to our local seniors' home, and the kids set the tables, including the placemats that they made. They also sang to the seniors during the seniors' lunch. We had many smiles...seniors and children alike! It was wonderful!!
I hope that others do this also...it was very enjoyable for all involved!

Welcome to the Neighborhood
Some members of our community have gotten together and when new people move into our area we each pitch in some money and make a basket to welcome them. I think this is important for many reasons, but the most important one is just so the newcomers will know some of their neighbors. Too many people these days move into communities and never really connect with any of their neighbors. Have you introduced yourself to your neighbor yet?

Balls of Yarn
I bet that everyone has a local seniors center or home in their neighborhood! Everyone has an opportunity to make a seniors day.
For the past 13 years I have been buying huge garbage bags of yarn at the Salvation Army and other second hand store were I can purchase this cheap (for I do not have much money) and then I drop them off at the local seniors home.
Many seniors love to knit and do crafts. But many homes do not supply this! Senior homes have limited funds and most do not supply what they determine extras. So why not make a seniors day in your area. I bet they will appreciate it!
I get the biggest JOY from seeing what they have made out of the yarn.

Yardsale Freebies
This weekend in our community there was a community yardsale and fundraiser. I thought maybe I would try something a little different.
I collected all the books I had around that I no longer needed (as I have been collecting books for 20 years). I had almost 200 books. I took these and other items, radios, stickers, toys, etc, and put them on a couple of tables and propped up a sign marked FREE and walked away.
I think this is a great idea, some people come with little money in their pockets and all kids love free toys.

All the Smiles that $20 Can Bring
It is amazing how many smiles $20 can bring.
Most local dollar stores sell very nice stuffed animals. This presents a great opportunity to bring smiles! I love to purchase stuffed animals, put them in nice gift bags and then randomly give them out to anyone that looks like they can use a smile!
All you have to do is take a walk down the street and I bet you will see that not everyone has a smile. This has always brought smiles and the smiles that it brings is all the thank-you that you will need. Even so, people are always eager to let you know that you have given them a smile or how you changed their day! I try to remember that everyone is fighting there own battles and that everyone can always use a smile!
A small teddy bear can change someone's day!
