Anonymous Letter

My sister is in her second to last year of college, she is getting her Master's Degree in accounting. She and her group (Beta Alpha Psi) were preparing a presentation for a competition and she was so stressed out I thought she was going to break. She thought the presentation wasn't good enough and that her team wouldn't win first place.

I couldn't do anything but watch her break down from the pressure. So I decided to make her a card and write her a letter. In the letter, I told her that it's okay  if she didn't win, because knowing that she put all her heart and effort into it, she has already won. I anonymously placed the card on her desk.

That same night, she came up to me and hugged me. Even though I didn't sign the card, she knew it was me. She thanked me for the card and motivation. Her smile was absolutely delightful to see.

That weekend I wished her good luck and break a leg at the presentation. And her team got first place.  =]

Choose to Care

We're encouraged to be nice to other people. However, most people forget to be nice to their environment. Global warming is quite a big issue today in the 21st century. All around us we see the terrible effects, with even more to come. Pollution causes greenhouse gases to stay in Earth's atmosphere, increasing the temperature of the globe, melting glaciers in the north and south, causing abnormal weather behavior. Changed weather also promotes wildfires, diseases and crop failure through droughts and floods. There are some simple things you can do everyday to help preserve the Earth, prevent the extinction of animals such as the polar bear, and make earth a better place to live for you, your children, and future generations to come. Tons and tons of carbon dioxide are emitted by cars everyday, contributing to the climate crisis. We need to take action NOW to help slow down or even eliminate this ... Read Full Story >>

A Big Gift From My Grandma

My 16th birthday is in 18 days. I went to have brunch today with my grandma and she handed me an envelope and wished me a "happy early birthday".

I didn't open the envelope until I got home and discovered a hundred dollar bill in it!

I was in complete shock. Suddenly, feeling a wave of awe, I started tearing. As a retiree with no income and little retirement funds, my grandma barely has enough to pay her own rent and feed herself.   I wondered why she would do this; I would've never asked for anything for my birthday but for her love. My mom tells me that because she gave me the gift because she loves me and wanted me to buy something for myself to remember my 16th birthday.

Although I'm supposed to buy something for myself, I plan to save the one hundred dollar bill until I feel the time is right to use it.  Whether to save a polar bear or feed a homeless family, the $100 will not go to waste.

All my life, my grandma has cared for me and been there for me. Now, I will pass on everything she has given/taught me.

Returning A Shirt

Yesterday, I was at a track meet with my team.  After it was over, I was packing up and ready to leave when I spotted a black shirt on the ground by the fence. I pick it up and saw that it said "Stuyvesant High School Track - EVA". My friend told me to just leave it there, that she'll come back for it. I told her that I have friends who go to that high school and are also on the track team. I'll just give it to them. So i brought it home, folded it neatly and placed it in a bag so I can give it to my friend to give it to the girl Eva when I see her. I even attached a SMILE card to the shirt. =] A lot of times, track teams don't talk to each other because they think that if they ... Read Full Story >>

Just A Note...

A couple of days ago, I was feeling down for no reason and I didn't know how to get my spirits up again.

So I decided to write to two of my closest friends a little note. I told each of them how much I valued their friendship and that their mere presence always made my day. I thanked them for always being there to support me.

I saw them today and slipped the notes into their bags when they didn't notice.  Later that day, they both came up to me and gave me big hugs. It felt really nice!! =]

Two little notes that took me 5 minutes to write ended up cheering all 3 of us up! Joy comes in small packages.

Fast for Change

Here's a different way to look at time:

A child dies from starvation every 6 seconds which is the equivalent of 10 children an hour, which computes to 240 lives a day. The club I'm in at school hosted a 30-Hour Famine fundraiser to help feed starving children in poverty-stricken countries. $1 helps feed a child for a day. $30 helps care for a child for a month! My fellow peers and I decided to honor this time not only through our pockets but also through ourselves by fasting for change. As we sat together in solidarity, with empty plates and unused plastic forks and cups spread on the tablecloth before us,  we offered one of those 30 hours to silence. It was a silence dedicated to the young we have lost and to those 852 million youth we have yet to save.

And if this 852 came up to you, how many seconds would it take for you to decide what you would do?

Doggie Treats

When I went to volunteer at the animal shelter yesterday, I saw one of the dogs had a bandana wrapped around his neck and I thought that it was very cute and added a little personal touch.

Today, I passed by a discount store and I saw they sold bandanas for 99 cents each. I decided to buy one of every pattern. I plan to bring it with me the next time I go and put it on the dogs I walk. Certainly, it'll appeal to people who come in looking to adopt a pet.

I also bought a box of milkbones to give to the dogs as treats. They absolutely deserve to be loved.  It is really really important they they get adopted. Sadly, the shelter I volunteer at is a kill shelter and they put dogs and cats asleep because we have very limited space and because we're funded by the city, we cannot refuse to take in an animal that is found or surrendered.

I hope getting them treats and spending time with them would make them feel better. Sometimes, I feel like I have very limited power to help but I'm going my best. Still, I remain hopeful.

Circle of Sharing

One day, I wanted to do something different so I made a dozen or so cupcakes and brought them to school and gave them out to random friends. They thought it was cool. Every now and then, one of us would come to school with cookies, cupcakes, or anything else that's edible and share it. It's nothing extraordinary but it's a good feeling, to share. It's also good to know that you matter to someone and they would think of bringing extra food for you simply because you're their friend. I suppose it's another thing that brings friends closer. It's all good.
