A Newborn At My Doorstep

Nearly 6 years ago, a little boy was brought to me to look after in my day care.  He was a mere two days old.  After being with me for some 3 months, we realized that the "Mother" has disappeared, leaving this helpless little boy.

I could not get it over my heart to leave this child to his own defenses and decided to adopt him.  We come from different backgrounds and cultures, but I was will to endure everything in order to love this child unconditionally.

I adopted him and am proud to say that he is today a real blessing in my life!

Out Of The Mouths Of Children

A group of children, aged four through eight, were asked to answer the question: "What does love mean?" Some of the answers are amusing. Some are rather earthy. Others show a wisdom far beyond their years ... Love is that first feeling you feel before all the bad stuff gets in the way. When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toe nails any more. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love. When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth. Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other. Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any ... Read Full Story >>

My Daily Creed

Let me be a little kinder,
Let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those about me;
Let me praise a little more.
Let me be, when I am weary,
Just a little bit more cheery;
Let me serve a little better
those that I am striving for.

Let me be a little braver
When temptation bids me waver;
Let me strive a little harder to be all
that I should be.
Let me be a little meeker
With the brother that is weaker,
Let me think more of my neighbour
And a little less of me.

Shipwrecked Prayers

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island. The two survivors, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island. The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man's parcel of land remained barren. After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On ... A Happy Home For Kids

I used to run a day care in my home.

Most of my parents were single or they were struggling to just pay the bills. So I watched their children for whatever they could pay me. Sometimes that is just R50 a month. Sometimes more. There were even been times when they could not pay at all. But with me watching the kids they could keep their jobs and that meant a roof over the children's heads and food on the table for them.

In return, I got lots of love from the kids and thanks from the parents. I loved all the kids and took care of them like I did my own.

That was my part in helping to do small acts of kindness --  my happy home full of kids!

A Happy Bus Driver

Upon receiving my Smile cards I decided to put it to the test and see what happened.  Being summer here in South Africa now, it becomes rather hot and Thursday was one such day.

I decided to buy a cool drink for the driver of our Metro bus and give it to him on boarding the bus on my way home.  Having purchased the cool drink, I boarded the bus and paid, after which I produced the drink and smile card.

I sure wish you could have been there to see the man's face break into the biggest smile which I have ever seen.  According to him, it was the first time in the 37 years of being a driver that he had received some sort of acknowledgment from anybody.

This brought a smile to my face and a tear to my heart.

Thanks to helpothers.org for my smile cards.
