Every Kid Needs Smarties!

Yesterday my son, daughter and I went to the grocery store.  Ahead of us in line was a little girl with her mother.  The little girl was asking her mother for a box of Smarties.  She was asking very politely and you could see it almost broke the mother's heart when she said, "I'm sorry, Honey, but we just can't afford it." My son was watching that dialogue.  Incidentally, he had been raking leaves in our yard to raise himself some money to buy a treat.   As he watched the mother and daughter leave the store, he ran to the candy counter and grabbed a box of Smarties.   (It turns out that I had also grabbed one pack).   My son proudly placed the Smarties on the conveyor belt, pulled out his money and bought the Smarties.  He turned to look at me and I just nodded.  Out he ran after the ... The Biggest, Bestest Present Ever!

There is an elderly man who lives up the street from us.  He has no one to shovel his driveway.  He is a bit of a miser so most people aren't so inclined to help.  One day, I don't know who did it, but someone used the sticky snow on his driveway to make a whole bunch of snowmen on his lawn facing his front window.  They were all smiling and waving and his driveway got cleared in the making of them. As my son and I were walking by, I could hear him grumbling under his breath.  "What's the problem?" I asked him.  He complained that someone had trespassed on his lawn and made a bunch of snowmen.  My son, not knowing what trespass meant, assumed this was a good thing.  He said "Wow, sir, that's the biggest bestest present I've ever seen!!"   Innocently, he then turned to me asked, ... Halloween Candy Robbery

Last year, when my son and I were out trick-or-treating on Halloween, we saw two young girls ahead of us.  One was dressed as an angel and one was a cowgirl; as they reached the corner of the street, two teenage punks ran by and stole the girls candy.  The older one ran after them and the younger one started to cry.  (They were obviously almost finished, as their bags were full.)

My little boy went up to the little girl and gave her and her sister ALL of his candy.

By this time, the little girl crying had attracted a lot of attention.  All the neighbors chipped in and everyone went home with plenty of candy.

As for the thugs -- in a small town like this, everyone knows each other and they made restitution by means of community service.  And my little boy, he's known by his heart of pure gold -- I am so proud!

Coffee For Two For Who?

Last night my husband, another friend and our children went out for dinner.

When it came time to pay the bill, I asked the waitress to add two coffees to the bill.  She thought I was crazy until I said to her:  "Please use this money to pay for the next two people that come in for coffee. "

I then gave her a smile card and asked her to give it to them.  She read the card agreed to do it and not to pass on my name (we live in a SMALL town.)

So I'm not sure who I bought coffe for, but then, it really doesn't matter.

Goodies for the Children

Lately it seems I never have enough time to get everything done. I recently found out however that a lot of local children get three meals a day but but nothing more because their parents cannot afford treats, such as cookies. So, I decided to hold a baking workshop. This workshop was for children ages four to 16. - sixteen. I offered it free of charge of course and got them to make LOTS of different cookies and desserts, complete with icing and sprinkles and cherries of course!) We spent all day baking. A lot of their mother's also helped out. When we were finished each child -- there were 14 in all -- got to fill an ice cream bucket with goodies. All the left overs were donated to a local church bake sales. We all had a blast and I have promised to do this again next year. I can't wait, it was soooo much fun!
